    Experiments on identification and control of inflow disturbances in contracting streams

    Vorticity from all surfaces and isolated objects in the vicinity of the fan intake, including the outside surfaces of the fan housing, were identified as the major sources for disturbances leading to blade passing frequency noise. The previously proposed mechanism based on atmospheric turbulence is refuted. Flow visualization and hot wire techniques were used in three different facilities to document the evolution of various types of disturbances, including the details of the mean flow and turbulence characteristics. The results suggest that special attention must be devoted to the design of the inlet and that geometric modeling may not lead to adequate simulation of the in flight characteristics. While honeycomb type flow manipulators appear to be effective in reducing some of the disturbances, higher pressure drop devices that generate adequate turbulence, for mixing of isolated nonuniformities, may be necessary to suppress the remaining disturbances. The results are also applicable to the design of inlets of open return wind tunnels and similar flow facilities

    Pseudo spin-orbit coupling of Dirac particles in graphene spintronics

    We study the pseudo spin-orbital (SO) effects experienced by massive Dirac particles in graphene, which can potentially be of a larger magnitude compared to the conventional Rashba SO effects experienced by particles in a 2DEG semiconductor heterostructure. In order to generate a uniform vertical pseudo SO field, we propose an artificial atomic structure, consisting of a graphene ring and a charged nanodot at the center which produces a large radial electric field. In this structure, a large pseudo SO coupling strength can be achieved by accelerating the Dirac particles around the ring, due to the small energy gap in graphene and the large radial electric field emanating from the charged nanodot. We discuss the theoretical possibility of harnessing the pseudo SO effects in mesoscopic applications, e.g. pseudo spin relaxation and switching.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    In the original article we presented results that show that the strain in germanium (Ge) epitaxial films grown directly on a silicon (Si) (001) with 6Ā° offcut has a tensile strain of 0.6%. This strain value is much higher than the typical tensile strain value of 0.2% reported for Ge/Si. This discrepancy is due unintentional omission of the Si offcut angle and azimuth angle (Ļ†) of the sample during high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD) measurement, and it has unfortunately resulted in a misleading result

    Quantum Cryptography Using Single Particle Entanglement

    Non-thermalization in trapped atomic ion spin chains

    Linear arrays of trapped and laser cooled atomic ions are a versatile platform for studying emergent phenomena in strongly-interacting many-body systems. Effective spins are encoded in long-lived electronic levels of each ion and made to interact through laser mediated optical dipole forces. The advantages of experiments with cold trapped ions, including high spatiotemporal resolution, decoupling from the external environment, and control over the system Hamiltonian, are used to measure quantum effects not always accessible in natural condensed matter samples. In this review we highlight recent work using trapped ions to explore a variety of non-ergodic phenomena in long-range interacting spin-models which are heralded by memory of out-of-equilibrium initial conditions. We observe long-lived memory in static magnetizations for quenched many-body localization and prethermalization, while memory is preserved in the periodic oscillations of a driven discrete time crystal state.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted for edition of Phil.     Annular pancreas: endoscopic and pancreatographic findings from a tertiary referral ERCP center

    Background and Aims Annular pancreas is a congenital anomaly whereby pancreatic tissue encircles the duodenum. Current knowledge of endoscopic findings of annular pancreas is limited to small case series. The aim of this study was to describe the endoscopic and pancreatographic findings of patients with annular pancreas at a large tertiary care ERCP center. Methods This is a retrospective observational study. Our Institutional Review Boardā€“approved, prospectively collected ERCP database was queried for cases of annular pancreas. The electronic medical records were searched for patient and procedure-related data. Results From January 1, 1994, to December 31, 2016, 46 patients with annular pancreas underwent ERCP at our institution. Index ERCP was technically successful in 42 patients (91.3%), and technical success was achieved in all 46 patients (100%) after 2 attempts, when required. A duodenal narrowing or ring was found in most patients (n = 39, 84.8%), yet only 2 (4.3%) had retained gastric contents. Pancreas divisum was found in 21 patients (45.7%), 18 of which were complete divisum. Pancreatobiliary neoplasia was the indication for ERCP in 7 patients (15.2%). Pancreatographic findings consistent with chronic pancreatitis were noted in 15 patients (32.6%) at the index ERCP. Conclusion This is the largest series describing the endoscopic and pancreatographic findings of patients with annular pancreas. We found that 45.7% of patients had concurrent pancreas divisum. Endoscopic therapy was successful in most patients at our institution after 1 ERCP, and in all patients after a second ERCP. Nearly one-third of patients had findings consistent with chronic pancreatitis at the time of index ERCP. It is unclear whether this may be a feature of the natural history of annular pancreas
